Registration is now open to sign up for this year’s Boyle Heights 5k Run/Walk, which will take place on Oct. 12. Over 1,000 runners are expected to run the race, which starts and ends at Mariachi Plaza and runs through various Boyle Heights streets.

The race will kick off at 8 a.m with a Munchkin Run where little kids are encouraged to run followed by the 5k Run/Walk at 8:30 a.m. Advance registration is $25; on site registration the day of the event, starting at 6:30 a.m., will be $30. Register here.

All participants will receive a t-shirt and participating medal. Fastest male and female runners will be declared grand prize winners; each will be awarded a round trip airline ticket to anywhere in Mexico. Custom medals will be given to the top 3 5k runners in different age categories.

After the race, organizers will host a free Community Health Fest that will promote healthy eating lifestyles, physical activities and art. The fest is open to everyone in the community, including those who don’t compete in the race. Walgreens will be providing 150 free flu shots on a first-come basis.

Organizers recommend taking the Metro Gold line to Mariachi Plaza since parking will be limited. Residents should note that streets along the route will be closed to traffic during the race, that parking will be restricted and towing will be enforced.
