Going to the 1984 Olympics, the original painting by Frank Romero which served as the basis for his iconic mural overlooking the Hollywood Freeway, will be on display at LA Plaza de Cultura y Artes from November 18 through September 2022. In 2007, the mural sparked controversy and a necessary conversation about the loss of valuable murals of Los Angeles after it was painted over by Caltrans. Highlighting the artistic contribution that Los Angeles-based Chicana/o artists made in American art, LA Plaza de Cultura y Artes presents L.A. Memo: Chicana/o Art from 1972-1989. Organized by AltaMed, LA Plaza de Cultura y Artes, this exhibition investigates how Chicana/o artists adapted new modes of image-making, self-expression, and broke barriers to create a pivotal genre of art to tell their stories through painting, film, television, magazines, newspapers, theater, and music.
