Registration is now open for Boyle Heights’ highly anticipated “Miracle on 1st Street” turkey giveaway at the Hollenbeck Youth Center, returning for its 44th year.

How to register

The last day to register in person to receive a free turkey is Thursday, Nov. 13, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Hollenbeck Youth Center, located at 2015 E. 1st St.

If you’re unable to make it in person, an online signup sheet is available here or at getaturkey.org.

Who can apply?

According to the online registration form, the giveaway is need-based, meaning priority will be given to those for whom it will ease a financial burden or provide a necessary resource. While priority will be given to Boyle Heights residents, Priscilla Hernandez, president of the Hollenbeck Youth Center, said the center strives not to turn anyone away.

Turkey, produce and more

This year’s event will distribute 1,000 turkeys on Nov. 25, along with bags of produce and shelf-stable items to ensure that families can make a complete Thanksgiving dinner. Only one turkey will be provided per household.

The annual event consistently draws attention due to its star-studded volunteers, including former California Governor and action film star Arnold Schwarzenegger, who has volunteered at the event since 1991. Other notable guests have included actors Tom Arnold and Gabriel Luna.

Giveaway comes at time of need

Hernandez said this year’s giveaway is especially important, noting that food insecurity and anxiety have grown following recent ICE presence in the community.

“We want to make sure we remain steadfast in what we give and that’s why we’ve kept going for 44 years. Rain or shine, we’ve continued on,” said Hernandez.
