This season, athletes from the Boyle Heights Wolfpack youth football program put in relentless work. On Mondays, they studied film from previous games. Tuesday through Thursday, they were on the field practicing plays and cheers, preparing for their weekend games.
That dedication pushed several divisions to the postseason, with the Jr. Pee Wee squad making it all the way into the championship.
“This is why I defend Boyle Heights so much because this is the Boyle Heights people don’t see,” said Jessica Davila, 43, aunt and godmother of Jr. Pee Wee football player, Aiden Davila.
But it’s not just the student-athletes putting in the work. Their families also play a big role, driving their children to practice, waking up early for weekend games, and filling the stands as their loudest cheerleaders.
Every weekend, families dressed in black, grey, and white fill the bleachers, there to represent a loud and unified Wolfpack.
This past Saturday, that hard work paid off when the Boyle Heights Wolfpack Jr. Pee Wee team beat the Glendora Tartans 13–12, to claim the program’s first-ever San Gabriel Valley Junior All American Football championship. Youth reporter Alyssa Lopez captured the excitement leading up to the final game.
