A park in East Los Angeles just received a major purple-and-gold upgrade with the unveiling of a newly renovated basketball court honoring Lakers legend Kobe Bryant and his daughter Gianna.
The outdoor court at Atlantic Avenue Park was revealed Monday by BodyArmor sports drink and the Mamba and Mambacita Sports Foundation, in partnership with the Los Angeles County Department of Parks and Recreation.
Students from nearby St. Alphonsus School joined the ribbon-cutting ceremony to mark the court’s official opening. They heard from USC women’s head basketball coach Lindsay Gottlieb and participated in a basketball clinic, shooting free throws and running drills alongside Natalia Bryant and USC alumna India Otto.
The tribute marks a special significance as May is Gianna Bryant’s birthday month; she would have turned 19 this year.
“My sister would want everyone to play her way, play Gigi’s way. A level of competitiveness and also sportsmanship, as well. And, same with my dad, the Mamba mentality. I know that he just wants as many kids to be playing on this court, practicing every day,” Natalia Bryant told NBCLA.
The renovated court has Kobe and Gianna Bryant’s names painted at center court, surrounded by butterflies. The sidelines display the hashtag #PlayGigisWay, and the free throw lines are marked with their numbers: 24 for Kobe and 2 for Gianna.
L.A. County Supervisor Hilda Solis recognized the foundation and BodyArmor with certificates marking their “unwavering support and commitment to this project.”
The court will serve the surrounding East L.A. community and students from four nearby schools: James A. Garfield High School, Esperanza College Preparatory, 4th Street Primary Center, and St. Alphonsus School.
The latest project follows the May 1 launch of the Gianna Bryant Scholarship Award by the Mamba and Mambacita Foundation, which awarded scholarships to three young girls from the Variety Boys and Girls Club in Boyle Heights.
