Boyle Heights youth are set to perform Thursday May 19 at a free community event in Boyle Heights called ‘Noches de Serenata.’ The group is called the Boyle Heights Strings and they’re made up of four children ages 10 to 14. ‘Noches de Serenata,’ is expected to bring 5,000 people to Mariachi Plaza for a free night of music, art and dance.
EGP News reports that Michael Hudson-Medina leads the group of violinists. Hudson-Medina reportedly teaches the students to play pieces by classic artists like Bach, Vivaldi, and Mozart but they also perform mariachi music. Hudson-Medina reportedly started teaching music because he saw a need to expose Eastside youth to classical music, EGP writes.
Hudson-Medina tells EGP that one of his students, Maite Castro, will be the first Boyle Heights resident to attend the prestigious Colburn School of Music in downtown L.A. on a full scholarship.
