Volunteer community members, organizations and agencies brought out their brooms Saturday in Boyle Heights to participate in a community clean up hosted by Councilman Jose Huizar’s office.
The event kicked off at the Boyle Heights City Hall, where various groups joined forces and tackled a plan to conduct clean ups along 1st Street, 4th Street, Whittier Blvd and various other corridors. A group of parents united and cleaned around Stevenson Middle School, while others focused on Olympic Blvd.
Silvia Acuna, mother and community member, participate d in the clean up with her children. “I like to see my children’s enthusiasm,” she said, explaining that she teaches them to clean up around her house, too.
When asked if the clean up should happen more often, community member Alex Guerrero explained: “It should happen more than once a year. We work as a team and it shows that Boyle Heights is a strong community.”
The clean up brought together local organizations to support the community and residents in an effort to provide a cleaner green space.
Everyone was on foot as three city trucks helped collect bulky items and dropped them off at the temporary rollup bin.
“The leadership the Boyle Heights collaborative has shown is the kind of thing every community needs. If we can keep going, there is nothing that can get in the way of making Boyle Heights one of the best communities in the nation,” said Pablo Artaza, a representative from Technical College.
