Super Tortas Luisito should be called “Super Todas Luisito” because everything here is delicious. Only a few steps east of State on First Street, the place is easy to find because of the banner above a doorway with the eatery’s name.

The small restaurant is one of Boyle Heights’ hidden gems (or what some might like to call “a hole in the wall”). If you blink, you may miss it. Sitting between Homeboy Industries and The 1st St. Pool Billiards, it is almost a cozy looking spot.

Owner Santiago Galvez took over the location about three years ago and refurbished the restaurant. The place is quaint and only has nine tables. As you walk in, what grabs your attention is the colorful menu full of a variety of items to choose from. Their rush is usually around 6 p.m. for dinner. I have been here a few times and I have only seen two cooks in the kitchen both times. They are consistent and very friendly.

The food always comes out just as good as the last time I was there. One of my favorite items is the torta, which comes with beans, jalapeños, onion, tomato, lettuce, avocado sauce, chipotle sauce and cheese plus your choice of meat –all for $5.75. Needless to say, it is very filling and every item on the torta comes through with every bite. The beans are not dry. The jalapeños and chipotle work together in a good combination of spice. The veggies give it a nice subtle freshness.

Another popular dish is the carne asada nachos. They are filling, healthy in size and delicious. Super Tortas Luisitos mostly serves Mexican food (with the exception of a few sandwiches).

They are open Monday through Saturday from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. Whether in the mood for breakfast, lunch or dinner, they have you covered. They have a wide variety of flavorful juices, licuados, aguas frescas, smoothies, and fruit salads. The prices range from $2.20 to $5.50.

Super Tortas Luisitos is at 1908 ¾ East 1st Street. Information: (323) 261-8384 or their Facebook page.
