Two shooting incidents were reported within a 48 hour period this week in Boyle Heights, including one where a 37-year-old man died.
Police say that Roberto Gutiérrez, of Rancho Cucamonga, was fatally shot while sitting in his SUV Monday in Boyle Heights. An LAPD officer told KTLA that the shooting occurred around 4 p.m. on Second Street between Cummings and St. Louis streets. The assailant either walked up or drove by and shot him, he said.
Gutiérrez died at the scene. Police have made no arrests.
The second shooting occurred early Wednesday morning not far from the Monday incident. According to police, a man suffered a wound to the back in a drive-by shooting about 4:15 a.m. at the intersection of North State Street and City View Avenue.
“Our victim was walking down the street when a vehicle pulls up and someone fires several rounds, one of them hitting him in the back,” LAPD Sgt. Michael Castaneda of the Hollenbeck Division told City News Service.
Castaneda said the victim, who has not been identified, is being uncooperative with police. He was transported to a hospital for treatment and his condition was not immediately reported.
A witness told officers at the Wednesday scene that the gunman fled in a white truck towards the nearby 10 Freeway, CNS reported.
Police have not said if the two incidents are related. Authorities are asking anyone with information about either incident to call the Hollenbeck Division at (323) 342-4100 or homicide detectives at (323) 342-8900.
