Council District 14 voters will get a chance to share their opinions on how the lines should be drawn for the city’s new council district maps at a public hearing tonight in Boyle Heights.

The Los Angeles City Council Redistricting Commission, a 21-member panel, began holding a series of hearings last week to introduce the public to the redistricting process. A these hearings, residents can make comments and provide suggestions before the commission””a democratic act which can help communities shape their political representation.

Redistricting is part of a process that happens every 10 years following the release of U.S. census data. After assessing the changes in population, maps need to be redrawn to make districts as equally populated as possible.

The commission is required to get the public’s input before presenting recommendations to the City Council who will need to establish boundaries for Los Angeles’ 15 districts and adopt a final map by July 2012.

Although significant changes are unlikely in the Boyle Heights area, according to Councilman Jose Huizar’s office, other areas in district 14 are expected to grow.

Tonight’s meeting will be held from 6:30 p.m.-9:30 p.m. at the Boyle Heights Senior Citizen Center at 2839 East 3rd Street, Los Angeles, CA 90033. Click here to view the meeting’s agenda.
