Police are asking for the public’s help to identify and locate a motorist who struck and fatally injured a 70-year-old nun in Boyle Heights.

On Monday police said that Sister Raquel Díaz died Sunday in an area hospital.

According to published news reports, Díaz was in the crosswalk at Winter Street and North Evergreen Avenue when she was struck about 5:20 p.m. Sunday by a vehicle going southbound on Evergreen. Police believe the vehicle was a white, four door compact, possibly a Nissan or Toyota. Originally it had been described as a black truck.

LAPD told City News Service that the driver of the vehicle continued south on Evergreen without stopping. Police have no suspect information and no arrests have been made.

Díaz, who had been a nun for over 50 years, was director of religious education at the Church of the Assumption, which is near the intersection where she was struck. She was taken by paramedics to a nearby hospital where she died a week after the accident.

The city is offering a reward of up to $50,000 is available for information leading to the driver’s arrest and conviction.
