The women behind Chicanas, Cholas y Chisme return to the stage at Casa 0101 for their fifth annual festival of short plays, this time exploring Latinas’  perspectives on the iconic Mexican painter Frida Kahlo.

“Chicanas, Cholas y Chisme’s Su Frida Calo!” opens Friday, March 17 at the Boyle Heights theater and features new performances by emerging and experienced Chicana and Latina playwrights.

In a press release, producers Claudia Duran and Lindsey Haley say their idea behind “Chicanas, Cholas y Chisme” is to  “empower Latinas by giving them the tools to develop new creative works.” Some of the playwrights have also taken on the roles of directors and associate producers.

“Chicanas, Cholas y Chisme’s Su Frida Calo!,”  runs through April 16 on Fridays and Saturdays at 8p.m. and Sundays at 5p.m. Tickets for general admission are $20. Casa 0101 Theater is located at 2102 East 1st Street.
