Police are seeking more information about a man who was arrested for allegedly attempting to sexually assault a woman inside Resurrection Church in Boyle Heights this past weekend.

The victim was attacked in the sacristy  of the church on the 3300 block of Opal Street  at about 10:40 am on Sunday, May 6, according to a police statement. The man, identified as 50-year-old James Meléndez, fled the scene after the woman defended herself.

Melendez’s vehicle was later located and impounded by police. Three days later Meléndez was arrested and booked for assault with the intent to commit sexual assault. He is being held on $100,000 bail.
