Authorities have identified the man who was shot and killed in Boyle Heights this week.

A spokesperson for the Los Angeles Police Department told City News Service that the shooting was reported at 12:40 a.m. Thursday in the 3500 block of Lanfranco Street.  The man was identified by the county coroner’s office as 21-year-old Mark Areas of Los Angeles. Police said he was pronounced dead at the scene.

A description of the shooter was not revealed.

On Thursday, ABC 7 reported that the LAPD was searching for a suspect and was seeking the public’s help in identifying the shooter. The LAPD told ABC that the attack was possibly gang-related.

This is the second shooting death reported this month in Boyle Heights. A 31-year-old man died April 5 in an apparent shooting incident on the 2200  block of Whittier Boulevard. The earlier victim was identified as Kristian Gomes.
