Police say that the shooting of a 35-year-old man in the early hours of Sunday in the Wyvernwood housing development was a gang-related incident.

City News Service reported that the victim has been identified as Alejandro Díaz by an investigator at the Coroner’s office. No residence for Díaz was given.

Various news sources have reported that the “walk up” shooting was reported at 1:10 a.m. in the 2800 block of The Mall, a short street that runs through the apartment complex.

City News Service quoted a watch commander at the Hollenbeck police station that said that the victim was pronounced dead at the scene from a gunshot wound to the head. There is no suspect information available.

In a Tweet, Hollenbeck’s Captain Martín Baeza confirmed it was a gang-related shooting:

Citing police statistics, the Los Angeles Times reported last week that violent crime was up 57% through Aug. 27 compared to the same time last year.
