A 16-year-old-boy was killed by Police in an officer-involved shooting Saturday night, near the corner of Lorena and 6th Streets in Boyle Heights.

NBC 4 reported Sunday afternoon that the teen had been identified as José Méndez by the Los Angeles County Coroner.

Police say the teen was believed to be driving a stolen vehicle and was armed. The incident is being investigated by LAPD.

According to published reports, on Saturday night LAPD Hollenbeck officers spotted the vehicle and began following the driver, originally identified as Latino male in his mid 20s. When the driver stopped the vehicle, an LAPD officer told the Los Angeles Times, “an officer-involved shooting occurred.”

The driver, later identified as Méndez, died at the scene.

According to a report on NBC4, nearby residents reported hearing six shots, but it is not known if the suspect fired at the officers. No officers were hurt in the shooting, according to NBC4.

This post was updated on Feb. 7 to indicate that the driver had been identified.
