Ciro’s has dished out classic Mexican-American fare — from crispy flautas to steaming bowls of menudo — for more than 40 years. But a few weeks ago regular customers began to notice that the Evergreen Avenue restaurant seemed permanently locked up behind a black steel gate. Now, many are asking if the neighborhood favorite will ever reopen.
The restaurant opened by the Gonzales family in 1972 has often been overshadowed by El Tepeyac, which has also been serving Mexican-American favorites for decades across the street and up the block. But Ciro’s has its own fan base that has been asking questions and expressing sadness on Yelp! and Facebook as the restaurant has remained closed.
“Not sure what happened but it appears that it is no longer open,” said on person on Yelp! “Inconsolably sad because this was one of my favorite restaurants.”
Some Yelpers! said the closure is related to a death in the family but that could not be confirmed. This week, the phone remained disconnected and an empty pizza box had been tossed into the entrance behind the locked steel gates.
