In honor of LGBTQ History month, which is celebrated in October, students, parents, teachers, administrators and community members are invited to participate in a forum intended to highlight the importance of celebrating diversity in schools.
“Our Queer Past – Shaping Our Future” is the name of the LGBTQ History Forum to be hosted on Thursday, October 12 by Mi Centro LGBTQ Community Center and the Latino Equality Alliance.
The forum will look at reasons why LGBTQ history is important, will go over important moments in L.A. LGBTQ history and include a discussion on providing a safer School Climate for LGBTQ Students. Much of the forum will be devoted to the recently approved FAIR Act (Fair, Accurate, Inclusive and Respectful Education Act), which requires that LGBTQ history be included in California schools’ curricula.
The forum at Self Help Graphics is also hosted by the Boyle Heights Beat, the One Archives Foundation, the GSA Network and BHC Boyle Heights, among other groups.
The forum is scheduled for 5:30 to 7:30, with free food served during registration beginning at 5 p.m. Self Help Graphics is at 1300 East 1st Street.
Those interested in participating are encouraged to RSVP here.
