Roosevelt High School will be going through a $173-million renovation and school district officials are asking Boyle Heights residents for their input at two upcoming public meetings this month.
The Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD) says the Comprehensive Modernization Project will bring four new buildings to the Roosevelt campus that will house 78 new classrooms, a performing arts center, a gymnasium, and a wellness clinic. The project will also demolish some of the most prominent and oldest buildings on campus –including the current gymnasium, the R-Building and auditorium– which has raised concern among Roosevelt alumni and other Boyle Heights residents.
In total, the school district says that 11 permanent structures that have been found “to be structurally compromised beyond repair,” will be destroyed. The Comprehensive Modernization Project is expected bring 225,000 square feet of new space to the Roosevelt campus.
The first of the two meetings will take place Saturday, Feb. 3 at 9:30 a.m. At the town hall meeting, district officials will give an overview of the project, an estimated timeline for the development, and present the design of the construction by the architect.
At a follow up meeting on Wednesday, Feb. 21 at 6:00 p.m., representatives from the district’s Office of Environmental Health and Safety will give a project update and take public comments on a draft Environmental Impact Report.
Both meetings will take place at the at the Roosevelt High School Cafeteria, located at 456 S. Mathews St., Los Angeles 90033, and parents, community members, and neighbors of Roosevelt High School are welcome.
