Boyle Heights often makes the news for its dangerous streets, but now it’s the cars and trucks that are bringing real hazards into the community and impacting the lives of the young.

While scientists point to the dangers lurking in the air, members of the community are organizing to do what they can to improve the health of their neighborhood.

This summer, East Los Angeles Community Corporation organized a dozen people to walk eight blocks in Boyle Heights for what is called “ground truthing”–taking note of trash, passing tractor trailers and factory pollution.

Boyle Heights Beat reporter Charley Patiño and photographer Angel Lizzaraga went along to document the activity.
