This Memorial Day Mayor-elect Eric Garcetti joined elected officials, veterans and community members at the All Wars Memorial at Cinco Puntos in Boyle Heights to pay tribute to veterans who have lost their lives fighting for the U.S.
Veterans began standing guard at 10 a.m. Sunday as part of the 66th annual 24-hour Memorial Day vigil. Veterans traded off in 30-minute shifts throughout the day and night.
Councilmember José Huizar, State Assembly Speaker John Perez and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 4696 were joined by Garcetti, a U.S. Navy reserve lieutenant, in a ceremony at 10 a.m. Monday. There, Garcetti was greeted by Boyle Heights Beat youth reporters who shared the latest edition of their work with the soon-to-be mayor. Major General Megan Tatu of the U.S. Army Reserves delivered the keynote address.
The Cinco Puntos All Wars Memorial is located at 3300 East Cesar Chavez Avenue.
