The Boyle Heights Stakeholder Association is rallying Southeast Los Angeles communities to protest for the shutdown of Exide Technologies, the battery recycling plant found to be releasing toxic chemicals earlier this year.

The demonstration will take place Wednesday, Oct. 30 at 5 p.m. at the corner of Downey Road and Bandini Blvd in Vernon.

Recent assessments by state regulators found Exide had been releasing high levels of arsenic and lead in air and soil, affecting more than 110,000 people in Boyle Heights and surrounding communities.

The company was shut down in April, but Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Luis Lavin overturned the decision allowing the company to continue operations temporarily. Another petition has been filed this month to once again close the site.

Community members in Boyle Heights, East Los Angeles, Maywood, Bell, Huntington Park, City Terrace, Montebello and more are being invited to protest.
