In 2015, BHB youth reporter Siboney Arias wrote about the gender gap in the workplace and found that although women make up 57 percent of the American workforce they still earn 77 cents for every dollar earned by a man in a similar position.

The numbers are worse for women of color, an issue dear to Los Angeles County Supervisor Hilda Solis. Her advice to Latinas seeking higher-paying jobs: go to college. And consider a career in public service. “Giving back to your community is as important as earning a top salary,” Solís told BHB.
