East Side Stories: A Grassroots Vision for Education and Community
Roosevelt High School, 456 South Mathews Street, Los Angeles, CA 90033
June 1st at 8:00 a.m.-2:30 p.m.

Los Angeles youth from a range of high schools, including Roosevelt, will present workshops on quality education, environmental justice, the school-to-prison pipeline, injustices facing undocumented students, and more. The public conference is an opportunity for students to teach community members about a range of social justice issues with an aim to foster youth empowerment and community organizing. The event will also include vendors, spoken word poetry, performances and art. East Side Stories is the second annual conference of the Roosevelt-based Politics & Pedagogy Collective. Eastside Community Festival @ Neighborhood Music School
358 S. Boyle Ave, Los Angeles, CA 90033
June 1st at 12p.m.-6 p.m.

Teaching Boyle Heights families about active organizations within their community, this free event will take place on the Neighborhood Music School’s backyard. Eight teams representing local groups including PUENTE Learning Center, i.am.angel Foundation, LA Streets Blog and the Boyle Heights Neighborhood Council will join a basketball tournament. Local organizations will set up booths to inform attendees of their missions and how people can organize and collaborate throughout the summer. Games, music, face painting and entertainment for children will be available. Food will be sold for $2 or less in attempts to raise money for future events. This event is sponsored by Girl Scouts of America, Girls Today Women Tomorrow and Caine’s Arcade.

National Day of Civic Hacking: AT&T Mobile App Hackathon
1600 E. 4th St., Los Angeles, CA 90033
Beginning June 1 at 10a.m. and ending June 2 at 4p.m.

The Boyle Heights Beat Technology Youth Center will be home to an event for National Day of Civic Hacking where the Boyle Heights community and app developers will have an opportunity to create an app for the city of Los Angeles. The AT&T Mobile App Hackathon is calling for amateur, professional, student developers, citizens and entrepreneurs to collaborate using publicly released data for the well-being for their community. Fellow Angelinos are free to attend during these times to learn how they can better their city using these tools and advances. Developers will pitch their completed apps on Sunday for a chance to win over $20k in cash prizes. More details here.

Somos Boyle Heights: “Building Healthy Hoodz” @ Legacy L.A.
1350 San Pablo St., Los Angeles, CA 90033
June 1st at 9:30 a.m.-4 p.m.

Feel empowered through your creative use of song, dance and spoken word at the event sponsored by the Building a Healthy Boyle Heights Collaborative Youth Engagement Committee. This free event will host activities to promote planning and build a stronger community voice. Registration will begin at 9:30 a.m., youth summit from 10-3 pm and social hour at 3-4 pm.

Fridays from 3-9p.m., Sundays from 12-6p.m.

Enjoy music, vendors, zumba, and crafts at the weekly open market at Mariachi Plaza.
