A 57-year-old man wounded in what was described as a drive-by shooting in Boyle Heights on Feb. 1 died a day later from his wounds, the Los Angeles Times reported Monday.

Citing Los Angeles County coroner’s records, the paper identified the victim as a “white male” named José Cruz.

The evening shooting occurred near the corner of South Savannah and Fourth Streets. It was not known if he was a Boyle Heights resident.

A police spokesperson told The Eastsider –which first reported the incident– that the victim was sitting near the shooting site “when the suspect drove up in a black sedan and fired numerous rounds in the victim’s direction at about 9:30 pm.”  The suspect fled in an unknown direction and police sought the public’s help in identifying the person.

The killing is the first homicide reported in Boyle Heights in 2018.
