The Boyle Heights City Hall, the final piece to improvements for the Boyle Heights Civic Center at 1st and Chicago streets, will celebrate its grand opening on Saturday with a ribbon cutting, open house and back-to-school resource fair.
The new hall will be home to Councilman Jose Huizar’s District 14 office as well as city departments and non-profit organizations such as the Boyle Heights Neighborhood Council, the Department of Aging, College Track, the Lucille Roybal Family Source Center and more.
The project was completed after a $22.4 million dollar renovation to the historic “Chicago Building.” Originally built in 1924 and once a Masonic temple, the structure was severely damaged after the 2008 Chino Hills Earthquake.
With help from Councilman Huizar and the city’s Bureau of Engineering and General Services Department, the building underwent a seismic retrofit and renovation.
Boyle Heights Civic Center is located on the intersection of Chicago and First streets, and already houses establishments like the new Hollenbeck Police Station, the renovated Benjamin Franklin Library and Ross Valencia Pocket Park.
The new Boyle Heights City Hall is located at 2130 East First Street in Boyle Heights. The grand opening celebration begins at 10 a.m. on Saturday, August 10. It is open to the public and will include activities for the family.
