Have you ever thought about reporting for your community on topics of health, art and culture or local heroes?
Now is your chance!
Boyle Heights Beat is currently seeking youth reporters to participate in an internship program beginning in this fall (with a boot camp training in the summer).
Since 2011, students from the area’s high schools have been mentored by professional journalists to produce a bilingual quarterly newspaper”” por y para la comunidad.
Youth reporters have an opportunity to be a voice for their community through storytelling””by learning the basics of journalism and interviewing politicians, community leaders, artists and citizens on various topics affecting their neighborhood. In addition to published stories in our print editions, student work is also published on our English and Spanish websites.
Interested students must either be Boyle Heights residents or attend a high school in Boyle Heights, and must commit to regular meetings and assignments to complete their stories. Meetings take place Tuesdays from 4:15 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. and Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 12 noon at the Wellness Center (General Hospital).
