A bilingual take on a Disney classic is making its West Coast premiere at Boyle Heights’ Casa 0101 community theater.
The musical Aladdin Dual Language Edition/Edición de lenguaje dual began a six-week run on January 13. Based on the hit Disney movie, the play uses both English and Spanish to tell the familiar story of the Arabian princess who falls in love with a street boy with a magical carpet.
In this version of Aladdin, the royalty in the palace speak Spanish and the people who live in the streets use English. Several characters, including animals, have dual language powers and serve as interpreters for mono-speakers of either language.
The musical is produced by Teatro Nuevos Horizontes company in association with Councilman Gilbert Cedillo’s office. The production is presented with a cast of 24 actors who share roles in multiple presentations every weekend.
Aladdin Dual Language Edition plays Fridays at 8 pm; Saturdays at 2, 5 and 8 pm; and Sundays at 1:00 4:00 and 7 pm., through Feb. 19. Tickets are $30 General Admission; $25 Students and Seniors; and $20 for Boyle Heights residents with ID.
Casa 0101 Theater is at 2102 East First Street (at St. Louis Street).
