The mariachi has long been recognized as an icon of Mexican culture and history. In Boyle Heights, the musicians mean more than heritage; they’re a part of the day-to-day working-class community.
To celebrate both the heritage and presence of the mariachi, the 23rd annual Mariachi Festival was held this Sunday at Mariachi Plaza.
This year, the festival paid tribute to the female mariachi, with performances from Trio Ellas, Mariachi Voz de America, Mariachi Reyna de Los Angeles, Las Colibri and Grammy award-winning Mariachi Divas de Cindy Shea.
