Letter to our readers: Boyle Heights Beat Launches a New Look – UPDATE IN PROGRESS

Esta página también disponible en: Español

Screen Shot 2014-10-27 at 3.34.37 PMToday we are delighted to unveil the beta version of our redesigned site for BoyleHeightsBeat.com/PulsodeBoyleHeights.com.

The redesigned site provides a cleaner design, more ways to display content, better integration of Spanish and English stories, and more opportunities to hear from you. For instance, if you have an event to promote, you can share it by using our event form.

The site showcases the work of our youth reporters, who join us from Boyle Heights high schools for an intensive internship where they learn and use new reporting, research and journalism writing skills. Interested in serving as a youth reporter? Fill out our application here.

Boyle Heights Beat also welcomes contributions from adults for our “community voices” section, where you can include your first-person stories about your family or your experiences in Boyle Heights. We meet monthly with community contributors and you are welcome to join us Wednesday evenings at the Boyle Heights Youth Technology Center for a 7:30 p.m. meeting. You don’t have to be a professional writer or photographer. We are there to work with you and to help you share your story.

The site was designed and built thanks to the efforts of Pekka Pekkala, a Finnish journalist whose work focuses on building online communities. Building the site was a team effort but we also want to share our appreciation to Jessica Perez, deputy editor of Boyle Heights Beat, for all her work on this project.

Please let us know your feedback on the site by clicking on this link.

Warmly,

Michelle Levander and Pedro Rojas
